TY: a reflection - mr walshe

The first ever Transition Year programme kicked off in August 2017 with a fantastic cohort of students. The Walking Trip to Glendalough took place in September which gave the group an opportunity to bond, build old and make new friendships - all the while walking over a 100,000 steps! There have been too many highlights to list them all here but in particular the Musical production of We Will Rock You was outstanding. Performing for 3 nights to packed and delighted audiences. The three weeks of Work Experience were also brilliant as students worked in diverse workplaces such as Ebay, An Garda Siochana, Baxter House Agency. Guidewire, Paypal, DSPCA, Bristol Myers-Squibb, PowerCity, local Primary Schools, Irish Cancer Society, Elverys and several Hospitals.

The TY Triple Thursdays provided opportunity for an array of workshops and guest speakers to enlighten, challenge and educate our TYs. Examples include, Discovery Gospel Choir, Workplace Relations, GOAL, Show Racism the Red Card, Recreate Business, Trocaire and the Irish School of Etiquette. A lot of learning took place outside the school campus such as trips to RTÉ for the filming of ‘Know the Score’ as well as with the school choir to lead Sunday Mass, Zeminar, Comedy Club, ITB, TY Expo, Reel Life Science, Fresh Film Festival Grand Final and BT Young Scientist. It wonderful to have finalists in latter three exhibitions mentioned above. Furthermore, we had 5 soloists at the Emmanuel concert this year - a national record, four of the 5 were TYs.

As well as being the first ever TY group in our school, this group were also the first ever group in the country to trial our innovative self-directed subject choice model. This allows students to book their English, Irish or Maths class for each day of the week. Students took ownership of their learning journey and have navigated this new model extremely well. Highlights included the Cube gameshow in Maths, Graphic Novels in Irish and Vlogs & book creation in English. Sport has played a central role in TY, for examples, students earning coaching badges for Spikeball and Rowing as well as coaching/teaching experience too. Several students have earned their Gaisce President’s award and the JPII award. The TY specific modules have also provided exciting and excellent learning moments throughout the year from criminal law to animal care, radio production to computer science. Students achieved food safety certificates, preparation for the Driver Theory Test and organised a stupendous Christmas Market under the tutelage of Mr McProfit and Ms. Collins.

TYs also led fundraising and awareness in the school with the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal, Spinal Injuries Ireland bag packing, Epilepsy Ireland. Show Racism the Red Card fashion show and more. Alpha was a particular highlight for TYs where they explored life’s big questions over 10 weeks and a retreat. The senior trip to Rome included singing in the Irish College, a private Mass at St. Peter’s, the Colosseum, Pompeii and a papal audience. A big thank to TY teachers who created wonderful modules for our students as well as countless extracurricular competitions, activities and experiences. A
special thank you to the two TY tutors, Ms. Sheehan & Mr. Harvey. Thank you also to Róisín Mc, Noel, Gerry, Dr. Moran, Ms. Harrington & TY parents.

A big thank you also to our TY students who invested in the programme and have benefitted greatly as a result. Growth was the theme and mindset for the programme and it has been a privilege to witness each TY grow in a multitude of ways during this year. Remember, planted, not buried. All the news and videos from this year is available at www.lecheilety.com. We still have an exciting month ahead in TY which includes an overnight up North & TY graduation!

Best,

Mr. Walshe

After the dramatic postponement of Emmanuel back in February because of Storm Emma's snow, the rescheduled Emmanuel day & concert took place on May 2nd at Our Lady of Victories Church & the Helix, DCU.
Le Chéile have participated since opening in 2014/15 making this our 4th year in a row. Building on our amazing 4 soloists and 60 choir members last year, we were blessed to have 5 soloists this year as well as our Edmund Rice College neighbours.
Loveth (TY), Daniels (5th), Destiny (TY), Veronika (TY) & Sharon (TY) were outstanding and represented their school and families with distinction - using their abundant gifts to praise God and lift all our hearts on the second day of summer!
Video clips from their performances can be seen below.
